A NEW Caribbean restaurant is due to open in Bradford city center next month and will offer traditional Caribbean cuisine, as well as dishes reinvented with a ‘modern twist’.
The new restaurant, called Kokobay Caribbean, will open in Sunbridge Wells’ underground neighborhood in April. Owner Errol Watson, who grew up in Bradford, said ‘the city center lacks this type of food’ and is ‘certainly in demand’.
“The reason we decided to do this is that I’m quite disappointed with the lack of Caribbean food, especially in the city centre. It’s really in high demand and sought after by the people of Bradford, so I decided to do something different.
“There’s going to be traditional Caribbean food, new reimagined Caribbean food and different Caribbean cocktails too. We’ll have things like curry goat that everyone already knows, jerk chicken and also new dishes that we’ve created like stuffed dumplings with things like chicken and tuna inside and creoles, and also vegetarian food.”
Mr Watson, who is Jamaican himself but came to England and has lived in Bradford since he was seven, highlighted how the new venue will be a restaurant rather than just a bar, and all the food will be prepared by a chef on the premises.
He said it wasn’t his first business venture, as he opened a Caribbean restaurant called Cocobana in Bradford in previous years, owned “a few pubs” on Manor Row when “it was the place to go” in downtown, but has spent the last 20 years in Spain, opening bars here.
But now he has returned to where he grew up to give Bradford a taste of the Caribbean.
He added: “There will be Caribbean music in the restaurant, and we will also have Caribbean nights from time to time and we will also offer a take-out service for people, if people do not want to sit down. .”
The new restaurant will be open five days a week, Tuesday to Saturday inside Sunbridgewells.
Sunbridgewells is an underground shopping complex in the town center which houses a number of pubs, bars, shops and restaurants.
It aims to provide new and seasoned entrepreneurs in the Bradford area with a place to trade, with flexible in-and-out trading conditions in the heart of the city centre.
