Atlanta Restaurants: Fast and casual Indian restaurant Sankranti opens on Perimeter Center Parkway in Dunwoody, GA

Srinivasa Nimmagadda, the owner of a new restaurant which will open this fall in the State Farm building in Dunwoody, wants to make Indian cuisine more “mainstream” by following the model of “healthy and accessible” fast casual chains like Chipotle.

With ten locations slated for the Atlanta area over the next year, Nimmagadda’s ultimate goal is to franchise and take Sankranti (“positive change”) nationwide.

“We are trying to reach American diners who are ready to try something new,” Nimmagadda said in a press release. “Our menu encourages exploration and offers a taste of India without having to travel.”

Nimmagadda, who owns a Johns Creek Indian restaurant and banquet hall also called Sankranti, hopes to continue to fill the “Indian food offerings void” in the fast-casual restaurant market with this more casual version of Sankranti, serving a menu. including dishes from the northern and southern regions of India. Expect to create your own curry bowls, kathi rolls, pulao, and skewers, as well as snacks like samosas on the menu here assembled when ordering at the counter, much like Chipotle. People can also choose their protein, including chicken tikka, malai chicken and lamb, paneer tikka masala, and mixed vegetable kurma.

Once opened, Sankranti will accommodate 30 people inside and outside on the patio. Sankranti will be part of a resurgence of restaurants currently taking place in the Perimeter Center area.

Thai-Chinese restaurant Yao opened in August along Perimeter Center Parkway. Yao, owned by Jakkrit Tuanphakdee and Adidsara Weerasin of Tum Pok Pok, is an elegant, multi-level restaurant serving dishes inspired by Bangkok’s Chinatown. A second Atlanta-area location of the Iron Hill Brewery and Brewery Brewery also opened this summer on Hammond Drive near the Perimeter Mall.

Scheduled to open in 2023, Chicago-based indoor mini-golf and restaurant Puttshack is opening its second Atlanta-area location in the future High Street development at the intersection of Perimeter Center Parkway and Hammond Drive. The 36-acre development includes ten city blocks and will eventually include a variety of retail stores and restaurants, as well as a number of offices and 600 luxury apartments.

Sankranti joins three other recently opened quick and casual Indian restaurants around Atlanta.

Earlier this summer, chef Bhojanic Archna Becker opened a second Tandoori Pizza and Wing Co. location at the Politan Row food hall in Colony Square. The stand serves vegetarian margherita and naan pizzas, tandoori-marinated wings, chickpea breaded potato wedges and samosas. In August, chef and Food Network personality Palak Patel opened the Dash and Chutney vegan Indian street food stand at Chattahoochee Food Works. This stand has vegan samosa chaat and sev papdi chaat on the menu, as well as vada pav (potato slider) and street snacks like charred corn and hanvo (salted lentil muffin).

The San Francisco-based Curry Up Now chain has two locations from Atlanta to North Decatur and now in the Reynoldstown neighborhood, serving a variety of biryani and thali platters as well as tikka masala, chicken or paneer naan, and Sexy Fries, a variation of poutine made with sweet potatoes.
