Bristol pub with Colston links reopens as all-day Indian restaurant


A new all-day Indian restaurant has opened on a site that was an iconic Bristol pub and brewery for over 40 years.

Haveli on Colston Street is the latest launch of famous local restaurateur Shahid Farooq, who previously ran Rajpoot in Clifton and Oh Calcutta on Cheltenham Road.

The contemporary Indian restaurant occupies the former premises of Colston Yard, which was originally the site of the Smiles Brewery, launched in 1978, and the Smiles Brewery Tap pub in the 1990s.

Haveli is run by Shahid’s 18-year-old son Amir and will take advantage of its location opposite the BRI and Children’s Hospital by offering English breakfast and lunch options and tapas dishes. during the day before serving Indian dishes in the evening.

Amir, who is currently studying for his BTEC Level 3 business education, said he was excited to follow in his father’s footsteps with his first managerial position in the restaurant industry.

Haveli will be open all day for drinks and a full cocktail menu will launch next week. The building is owned by the Butcombe Brewery and its range of beers and ciders is served on draft.

The interior of the restaurant is modern with backlit wall panels and marble table tops.

Options on the day’s menu will include take-out baguettes and pots of pasta to meet the needs of staff at the Bristol Royal Infirmary opposite looking for a quick bite to eat during their lunch breaks. NHS staff also get a 10% discount.

In the evening, traditional curry dishes include chicken tikka rogan, vindaloo tiger prawns and madras lamb.

The chef’s specialties include Ceylon fish curry, Afghan lamb, and Roshon Kora – a medium spicy chicken or lamb dish with lots of garlic, black pepper, fresh herbs and spices.

“Since the building was constructed seven months ago, we’ve pretty much ripped out everything and started from scratch,” Amir explains.

“Besides having a great sidewalk space outside, it is really warm and inviting inside and we hope that our all day menu will please everyone.”
