Closure of David Grutman’s Winker’s Diner in Miami Beach

Winker’s Diner, one of three Groot Hospitality restaurants located in the former Firestone Garage in Miami Beach, has closed. The closure came abruptly; the restaurant closed just before a Disco Inferno-themed New Year’s Eve celebration.

A representative from Groot Hospitality confirmed the sudden closure, explaining that Winker closed to make way for a new Groot restaurant.

The as-yet-unnamed replacement will open in the coming months; no concept has been announced.

A restaurant/deli specializing in pastrami, matzo ball soup and milkshakes, Winker’s opened in September 2021 with two sister locations after three years of planning and restoring the former garage at 1575 Alton Rd in South Beach.

The structure was first built in the 1930s as the Firestone tire store and garage, and its giant sign has welcomed motorists to Miami Beach for decades. The garage closed in 2015, and Grutman is committed to bringing the new space to life.

In an August 2021 interview, Grutman said new times“I love iconic and heritage things. The building is art deco and makes me feel like a representation of everything Miami Beach has to me. Taking a building that may have seen its last days and giving it new life is very cool.”

Although Winker’s is closed, Toothfairy (a bakery run by Dallas Wynne that specializes in cakes, homemade twinkies, and soft serve ice cream) and Sushi Fly Chicken (an izakaya that serves sushi, dumplings, and fried chicken) remain open.

new times will update this story with any further information.
