Family-run Indian restaurant opens in downtown Dayton

May 5 – A family-run Indian restaurant, already popular among Dayton locals, is hosting its soft-opening today in downtown Dayton.

Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine is located across from the Day Air Ballpark at 217 N. Patterson Blvd. The restaurant joins a row of eateries, including Winans Chocolates + Coffees and Flyboys Deli.

Customers can expect “freshly cooked meals that are good for the soul,” said Deepika Singh. She runs the restaurant with her husband, Jay.

Gulzar’s Indian cuisine is truly a family affair. Jay’s brother, AJ, and his wife look after the family’s other location in Richmond, Indiana. Jay and AJ’s father, Paramjeet, is the chef. He will be cooking in the family’s new location for at least six months, Deepika said.

“We’ve always been in the restaurant business,” Deepika said. “We didn’t plan for this. He (Jay) went to school to do physiotherapy and I’m a teacher, but both of our family backgrounds are in the catering business.”

Food and family go hand in hand,” Deepika added.

Gulzar’s Indian Kitchen will feature a variety of authentic Indian dishes and fan favourites. This includes their most popular dishes, chicken tika masala and chicken curry, Deepika explained. Their most authentic dishes, featuring a blend of onions, garlic, tomatoes, ginger and other authentic spices, will be listed under Chef Specials on the menu.

“We have the buffet, so we can educate people,” Deepika said. “We realize this will be new for a lot of people.”

The restaurant will offer a buffet lunch for $13.99. Customers can order from the main menu at any time of the day.

Deepika said Jay and AJ knew right away that this location in downtown Dayton was a perfect location for their new restaurant.

“They entered this place and within 15 minutes they knew it was the other place,” Deepika said.

Residents of downtown Dayton have been very welcoming to the new restaurateurs.

“We are so grateful to be somewhere where you never feel out of place – it feels like home,” Deepika said.

Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine will hold a grand opening once they get a liquor license, Deepika said.

“It will be a place where you can come, relax, eat good food and have a good time,” she added.

Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine is open Monday to Thursday 11am to 2:30pm for lunch and 5pm to 9pm for dinner, Friday 11am to 2:30pm for lunch and 5pm to 10pm for dinner, Saturday 11am to 10am. p.m., and Sunday noon to 9 p.m.
