Favorite Indian restaurant closes after 27 years

A well-known and beloved Indian restaurant in Leicester has closed after 27 years.

Namaste, at Hinckley Road, was opened in April 1994 by Mr. Dey.

The family business has become a local staple, developing over the years a loyal following that has become a ‘family’.

But to the disappointment of many, the Dey family announced the business would close earlier this month in a heartfelt message to customers.

The message shared on the restaurant’s website and Facebook page read: “As a family, we are truly so grateful for your custom, support and love over the years.

“Namaste was much more than a restaurant for Mr. Dey, where he also saw his customers as family.”

“He remembers the names of many people who have walked through its doors, watching generations of families grow up and come to dine for a curry.

“Students from the University of Leicester coming with their parents, so far with their children and three or four generations of families.”

Mr. Dey was known to all customers as the “happy and friendly” face of the restaurant.

Namaste last opened on Sunday October 24 as the owner, Mr Dey is stepping down to “focus on his health”.

Speaking to LeicestershireLive, Ms Dey, 63, said: ‘So many of our customers have aged with us and after we announced our closure, many of our former customers returned for a meal or take out with their families.

“It was so touching.”

She added: “We have had a good race the last 27 years and we finished on a good note.”
