Homicide detectives scoured the area for evidence, video or testimony.

“Right now, we’re really hoping people will call and provide dash cam video, or witnesses, to anyone in the bar last night,” Insp said. McCabe said. “If they can call and speak to our homicide office and let them know what you saw.”

The square was cordoned off with yellow police tape on Saturday – including a petrol station a few meters away.

Someone left two small bouquets of flowers next to an electric pole on the sidewalk not far from the front door of Le BLVD restaurant.

“This bar – as soon as it reopened after the pandemic – every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the police are there,” Bashriran said.

As he waited to retrieve his car stuck behind the police perimeter around the gas station parking lot, Bashriran also said there was a shooting last winter involving the same location.

According to a report, a shooting occurred in the restaurant car park in November 2021. Durham cops at the time said two groups of people fought and a man was shot and sustained injuries not putting his life in danger.

“I want to move out,” said Javad’s friend Melanie. “It’s a restless crowd passing by.”

The owners of a nearby Indian restaurant which opened just three weeks ago said they closed at 10.30pm on Saturday – before the shooting.

“This morning I got a call from my friend saying there had been a shooting in the plaza,” said Maitray Patel, owner of Chaalo Oshawa, next to the BLVD.

His business partner, Yesh Patel, confirmed what other locals had said about an earlier incident.

“It also happened a few months earlier. But no one died then,” he said.

They described the area as mainly populated by students who attend nearby Durham College.

“Every Friday, Saturday, this place is usually very crowded with students,” said Bryce Higham, who lives across the street from the square.

He says he didn’t hear any gunshots.

“I was sleeping at that time because I usually wake up at five in the morning,” he said.

On Saturday afternoon, investigators continued to take footage in the square.

“I can’t say if it’s targeted or not,” said Insp. McCabe. “We are still reviewing what we have from inside the bar. She was confined inside the facility. So I can’t say whether it’s targeted or not.
