Going to a new restaurant can be stressful sometimes, especially when you are unfamiliar with some of the menu items. You might know exactly how you like your salad made at the salad store near you, and you might even have memorized the healthiest meals you can order from any major fast food chain.
However, when you go to a new neighborhood restaurant, you can’t always trust your old favorites. We have what you need. Vandana Sheth, RDN, CDCES, FAND, Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist and author of âMy Indian Table: Quick & Tasty Vegetarian Recipesâ, spoke with Eat this, not that! on the healthiest choices in most Indian restaurants.
“Chana masala, baingan bharta, palak paneer, chapati or roti, [and] the cucumber raita would be part of my recommendations for a healthy meal, âsays Sheth.

If you’re looking for just one choice that’s going to be a solid choice, she recommends the first of those options, chana masala, which she says is a dish of “chickpeas cooked in a tomato-onion sauce.”
Sheth adds that if you go for chicken, you’d better go for a tandoori style dish than chicken tikka masala, as its yogurt and spice marinade is lighter than the heavy or thickened cream you would find in a tikka. masala. plate. Additionally, she recommends using naan as well as samosas and pakoras lightly, given all the refined flour these foods contain.
Of course, depending on which restaurant you go to, you might see different things on the menu. As Sheth notes, âIndian cuisine is very diverse. Most Indian restaurants in the United States offer a variety of dishes from different parts of the country, but mainly from the northern part of India.
Considering the variation from restaurant to restaurant, it couldn’t hurt to have backup options. Sheth also suggests that you can opt for one of the many additional vegetarian and nutritious options, including dals, rajma, or aloo gobi.
Next time you go to an Indian restaurant and don’t want to have to ask your mates or waiters a bunch of questions about how each meal is prepared, consider going to chana masala or one of the others. RDN- options approved.
