A restaurant and bar owner reportedly committed suicide in one of the rooms at the Virar establishment in Palghar district, Maharashtra, on Thursday.

According to police, Karunakar Putran left his home at 9 a.m. and went straight to his hotel. In the absence of personnel, Karunakar committed suicide. His body was found hanging from the ceiling of one of the rooms at YK Nakar.

Karunakar owed Rs 40 lakh in rent, electricity and other bills and could not pay debts incurred during the lockdown.

Meanwhile, Karunakar’s wife claimed that he was stalked which forced him to commit suicide.

“He’s had a lot of tension on his face over the last month. He hadn’t eaten or slept for a week. He was still tense and scared. He complained about how people harassed and humiliated him. I advised him to keep his cool and sell our property,” Karunakar’s wife said.

“Because of the debts, we had already sold our gold ornaments. He once told me that people would only understand him after he killed himself,” Karunakar’s wife said.

“I demand that those responsible be severely punished,” she said.

Virar police registered a case and the body was sent for an autopsy.
