New Indian restaurant hopes to win Guelph’s heart

The Miani family hope to recreate the success of their old restaurant in Montreal

The former owners of a popular Indian restaurant in Montreal hope to recreate their recipe for success in Guelph.

Newly opened at 20 Cowan Pl. In the south of town, Town’s Heart serves a variety of North Indian dishes including chicken tikka, veggie korma and lamb vindaloo, with a few southern favorites like the biryani.

“Everything is from scratch. We grind all the spices (ourselves),” explained Rupinder Miani, who owns the restaurant with her husband Sukhwinder, who does most of the cooking.

Their daughters, 11 and 16, also help with the business, as does a cousin.

The Mianis owned a similar facility in downtown Montreal before a family health emergency forced them to move to Kitchener in 2017 to be near specialty hospitals in southern Ontario.

“It was difficult,” she said. “We didn’t want to leave this place, we never wanted to leave, but the circumstances were not in our favor.”

At the time, their restaurant Curry Mahal, which still operates under different owners, had recently received a rave review in the Montreal Gazette.

“We have become very popular, very busy,” Miani said. “A health problem arose, we had to leave it. ”

Based in Kitchener, Miani, whose background is in biotechnical studies, has worked as a technician and as a school bus driver. Her husband worked as a cook. Finally, with the encouragement of their daughters, they decided to try again in the restaurant business.

“They (my daughters) missed something when we moved here,” she said, explaining that her children loved being in the bustling restaurant and the family missed the relationships they had with their customers.

The name of the new restaurant, which opened last week, was also chosen by her daughters.

“They said okay, ‘we’re going to put’ the heart of the city ‘because we’re going to make it the heart of the city and we’re doing something with the heart,” she explained.

When asked if the family had learned anything from their past business that they could employ in Guelph, Miani said no.

“We don’t have any tips. It’s very simple the way we do it here,” she says, explaining that they’re just looking to make good, affordable food.
