North East Indian restaurant named one of Britain’s best at “Curry Oscars”

An Indian restaurant in Darlington was named one of the country’s best curry restaurants at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.

The award-winning Café Spice, at Clarks Yard, received another accolade as it was named one of the nation’s top curry restaurants by Curry Life in their 2021 awards.

The restaurant, which opened in 2008, met with nominations for Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nepalese and Pakistani restaurants across the country before receiving the distinction at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, in the capital, Sunday evening.

After traveling into the early hours of the morning, Cafe Spice owner and chef Brian Miah said, “We’re really happy. We are really excited to win this award and it is a huge boost for our staff and the company.

“We have been open since 2008 and the response from the townspeople has always been fantastic.”

Darlington Restaurant has already won the Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA) Best Northeast Indian Restaurant Award in 2014, 2016 and 2019, and Mr. Miah was named BCA Chef of the Year in 2017.

When asked what makes Cafe Spice so special, Mr. Miah, 55, added: “I don’t know for sure, I think it’s our service and our food. taking care of our customers and ensuring the quality of our food is top notch.

“I am a chef and we do our best to provide the best for our customers.

“When they called out our name it was a fantastic feeling. We are so happy.”

Over the years, the popular restaurant has also been visited by famous faces, including former Top Gear and The Grand Tour presenter James May.

The Curry Life Awards and Gala Dinner were hosted in association with the Just Eat food ordering app.

The awards went to the UK’s best curry restaurants and top curry chefs, as well as the best curry takeaway.
