Popular Indian restaurant closes after 26 years in Westport

WESTPORT, CT – A popular Indian cuisine restaurant in Westport recently closed its doors after 26 years in business.

Mumbai Times, located at 616 Post Rd E, closed on December 31, according to the restaurant website. In one message to customers, owner Tarun Narula attributed the difficult decision to the restaurant which lost its lease.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for your love and support over the years,” the post read. “It was a pleasure to serve you.”

The message also states that the Mumbai Times team intends to reopen the restaurant “as soon as possible in a nearby location”.

A request for comment from the owner was not immediately returned.

Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce president Matthew Mandell said he was sad to see the restaurant close, as it had been a Westport staple for more than two decades.

“It’s a shame this happened,” Mandell said in an email to Patch. “They were an integral part of our community. I hope they can find a new location in town. I believe that is their intention.”

Narula’s post encouraged locals looking for “the same great food and service” as the Westport restaurant to visit the Mumbai Times’ Greenwich site and the Dhabewala Indian Shack in Stamford.

According to Greenwich location website, Mumbai Times offers “a traditional Indian cuisine culinary extravaganza”, offering “authentic Indian cuisine with southern and northern delicacies”.
