A restaurant has complained after claiming it received ‘Tesco crisps and Farmfoods fish’ during a visit to a popular pub. The customer had visited the pub in Solihull but said it was ‘poor food, ambience and staff personality’.
The client said he had not visited the Bull’s Head for 25 years – and it would be another 25 years before he returned. The anonymous reviewer described his experience as “awful” in a Tripadvisor review.
The Bull’s Head in the Barston area has a 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor – with over 250 reviews. It’s also included in Solihull’s top 15 restaurants, according to the travel website, and also won a Travellers’ Choice Award in 2021.

A recent reviewer said it was “simply amazing food”. While another described it as an ‘outstanding gem of a true English country pub’.
But this particular reviewer, who is from Solihull, left his negative thoughts on Tripadvisor after visiting in February. The title of the review simply called it “mediocre”.
Their full review read: “We visited this pub as we were told it had been refurbished under new ownership and the food was good. Believe me we haven’t been in 25 years, the last time was when Brad was running the place.
“Whoever owns it now has to sell and move on. Poorest food, ambiance, staff personality in a long time. Arrived at 6.50pm and returned home at 7.50pm!
“Set menu for Valentine’s meal only. Alternative was fish and chips plus some pie options. Selection of fish and chips. Well the chef provided Tesco fries from the freezer with what I believe to be Farmfoods fish!
“It will be at least another 25 years before we come back! Awful!!!”
However, the owner of Bulls Head, identified as Nick on Tripadvisor, decided to respond to their review – and they didn’t hold back. He said it was “amazing” how they cleared their plates and didn’t complain.
He also added that there were eight different main course options on offer during their visit. Nick also told them that “McDonald’s might be a better option” next time.
His response said: “What an awful review. We’re a country pub with real ales on tap on open fires and a busy little restaurant.
“The atmosphere has always been commented on that it’s still nice to be a traditional country pub. (Unfortunately we don’t offer on-site entertainment)
“The fish and chips you call Tesco chips (which they are not) amazes me how you cleared both of your plates while you sat in silence. The fish you ate without our staff not complains, comes straight from the sea and spends less than 24+ hours on land before it gets to your plate. Fish has never visited Farmfoods.
“We had offered eight different main courses when you visited, consisting of steak, pies and fish. I don’t know what you would have liked.
“Thanks for the advice to sell and move on, but as we’ve just gone through the worst two years in trading history with Covid, I think we’re here to stay a bit longer. Maybe next time McDonald’s would be a better option for your night out.”
The Bulls Head has 251 reviews on Tripadvisor – of which 208 are rated as “excellent” or “very good”. A review from four days ago said: “Our first experience at this wonderful place, the food was 5 star and the service provided by Zoe really made it special, we will definitely be back but a real thank you goes to the amazing chefs behind the scenes at the soup was lovely.”
Another reviewer added: “We went for lunch and it was fabulous. Two of us had different burgers and all cooked beautifully.
“The fish and chips were excellent and all served by a great lady whose name I didn’t catch. Our dogs were also well looked after. Living locally we will definitely be back.”
While Glenda said: “Outstanding food and service. Very friendly staff.
“Absolutely delicious food, freshly good, beautifully presented – truly excellent. Highly recommend.”
And Nick said: “We went to Bulls Head as we couldn’t get into other pubs which were booked out but we’re so glad we did. My partner and I both had the roast beef which was superb with all the trimmings, a good Sunday roast.
“We both had the apple and berry crumble which was also delicious. The service was very good and highly recommended.”
