Harvester is famous for its standalone salad bar, but Covid restrictions at a restaurant in Redditch proved too much for a furious diner. Fed up with not being able to help herself to the lettuce, croutons and potato salad at The Dog pub, a woman took to Tripadvisor to groan in a candid review.
‘Salad Bar – why???’ she angrily titled her review of The Dog in Henley Road, Mappleborough Green between Redditch and Studley. After visiting the restaurant four weeks ago, the restaurant said having a waitress serve the salad was an “absurd rule inherited from Covid”.
“We had to wait a while for our orders to be taken,” said the reviewer going by the name JanJugs. “When the food arrived it was good – tasty and the portions were generous. Maybe an extra waitress would help with the timing issues, maybe the one who has to stand by the salad bar and serve the salad – WHY??

“Absurd rule inherited from Covid which is a waste of time. Can’t believe this is preferred by customers, the salads were one of Harvester’s main selling points but having to point a little lettuce is ridiculous. “
Despite the reproach, the restaurant still left a four out of five star review of The Dog, which is on the Worcestershire/Warwickshire border, off Birmingham Road. The General Manager was quick to notice this and politely responded, explaining that the salad bar would not return to its help yourself method in the “foreseeable future”.
“I can only apologize that the salad served disappointed you,” wrote the general manager of The Dog. “The majority of feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive and this has been reflected throughout the Harvester brand as well.
“This decision is continually under review with the brand, but the decision to serve salad to our customers appears to be an immediate one. The salad bar is still unlimited and included in the price of your main meal.
“Please don’t be shy, feel free to ask as much as you like and visit as often as you like during your visit. We are happy to serve the salad to your exact specifications, let us know exactly how you like it.”

The manager added: “I am sorry that you were not completely satisfied with your visit and that the team did not reach you as quickly as expected. I am delighted to read that you enjoyed your meals overall and that despite some disappointments, we still felt we deserved a 4 star rating.”
Mitchells and Butlers, owner of the Harvester restaurant, declined to comment further.
