Restaurant owner retorts to dinner moaning – why are you coming back if we’re so bad?


The owner of a popular ‘pint and curry’ pub has hit back at a reviewer who complained about the food and toilets by saying: ‘If we are so bad why do you insist on coming back?

The New Soho Tavern in Birmingham is highly rated on Tripadvisor with an average rating of 4.5 stars and won a Travellers’ Choice Award last year. There are over 500 reviews and of those, 365 are “excellent” and 100 are “very good”, reports Birmingham Live.

The reviewer, who visited in December, said: “While the food here is very hit and miss, stick to the Punjabi curry. The toilets are a disgrace.

“This place needs toilet checks every hour, especially when it’s busy. I’ve seen cleaner toilets in Asian slums.”

In 2018 the same reviewer also posted a review for the desi pub – these are pubs offering an authentic Indian experience in a large British boozer.

They wrote: “Been coming here for a while, while the food has never been terrible, it has never been great. I come here for social reasons.

“I have to say it is now advisable to avoid the food. The grills are full of red chilli powder, the curries are practically inedible.

“Drink prices are not far off city center prices, especially for soft drinks. If you gave three or more, you clearly have no idea about Indian food and quality.

“I agree it’s cheap, but other places nearby are much better. And as for the service, you have about three or four 16-year-olds who don’t know how to take orders from food.”

But Mikey, the owner of the New Soho Tavern in Park Road, famous for its mixed grills, responded to the reviewer’s recent post – and he asked why the restaurant keeps coming back.

Son wrote: “Honestly we don’t appreciate your custom. You have given us negative reviews many times but you keep coming here.

“From saying the kids run the place to the food is crap and now the food is random, the toilets are bad. Honestly, if we were that bad, why do you insist on coming back?

“You are not welcome with your negative attitude towards us. Haven’t contacted a member of staff yet regarding your concerns, but are you the first to go online and write about it?

“If you would like to discuss this further, please email. Ps, we check the toilets every hour. And your continued custom only goes to show how good we are.”
