A restaurant owner hit back at a restaurant that gave a bad review by asking “if we’re so bad, why do you keep coming back?”

After a TripAdvisor reviewer called a restaurant a ‘hit and miss’, the owner of the popular desi restaurant popped the question as he said their continued custom proves ‘how [they] are”.

The New Soho Tavern in Birmingham is a much-loved restaurant, famous in the city for its mixed grills, reports Birmingham Live.

It has a 4.5 star rating on Tripadvisor – as well as a Travellers’ Choice award in 2021. Out of over 500 reviews – 365 are rated as “excellent” while 100 are “very good”.

But one reviewer disagreed.

A customer complained about the food, the state of the toilets and the teenagers of the staff.

Their reviewer, who visited last December, said: “While the food here is very hit or miss, stick to the Punjabi curry. The toilets are a disgrace.

“This place needs hourly restroom checks, especially when it’s busy.”

But Mikey, the owner of the New Soho Tavern, has now responded – asking the anonymous customer ‘why do you insist on coming back?’

The same reviewer also posted a review for New Soho Tavern in 2018, saying, “I’ve been coming here for a while, although the food has never been terrible, it’s never been great. I’ve been coming here for social reasons.

“I have to say it is now advisable to avoid the food. The grills are full of red chilli powder, the curries are practically inedible.

“Drink prices are not far off city center prices, especially for soft drinks. If you gave three or more, you clearly have no idea about Indian food and quality.

“I agree it’s cheap, but other places nearby are much better. And as for the service, you have about three or four 16-year-olds who don’t know how to take orders from food.”

Owner Mikey responded to the reviewer’s recent post – and he asked why the restaurant keeps coming back.

His response said: “Honestly we don’t appreciate your custom. You have given us negative reviews many times but you keep coming here.

“To say the kids are running the place to shitty food and now the food is random, the toilets are bad. Honestly, if we were that bad, why do you insist on coming back?

The Soho Tavern says it is an award-winning bar and restaurant specializing in upscale Indian food and drink, in an authentic, sociable environment.

“You are not welcome with your negative attitude towards us. Have you not yet contacted a staff member regarding your concerns, but are you the first to go online and write about it?

“If you would like to discuss this further, please email. Ps, we check the toilets every hour. And your continued custom only goes to show how good we are.”

“Friendly and efficient staff, a lively atmosphere and the food. Ah the food.

“Simply the best lamb chops I’ve had in a long time. My lady was doing the merry dance as she swallowed her prawns.”

Another reviewer said: “My husband and I haven’t visited since before the first lockdown so we were looking forward to going back and we weren’t disappointed.

“The mixed grill is always fantastic and we even had a side order of a curry – Amazing – so worth the wait, fantastic value, great atmosphere and we sat down and had watched football too – fantastic.”

As Mike in January said: “I had the butter chicken which is full of flavor and lots of chicken pieces! There was also the small mixed grill which is great to share while having another main course !

“This is my third time here and I truly think it is the best curry house in Birmingham! Friendly efficient staff and very clean!”
