A family-run restaurant has long been at the top of TripAdvisor’s ‘Best Indian Restaurants in Wirral’ list, so I put it to the test to see if it’s as good as the locals say it is.
Heswall Tandoori is based on Pensby Road and is a small restaurant that also offers take out. The recipes of the curry house have been passed down from generation to generation and include classic dishes and modern creations.
As well as being named the best Indian in Wirral, Heswall Tandoori is also the second best restaurant in Wirral. Overall it has a rating of 4.5 on TripAdvisor.

Heard great things about Heswall Tandoori so couldn’t wait to try it for myself.
I was ordering for two of us and we chose chicken korma (£ 8.95) with pilau rice (£ 2.75), makonwalla tandoori shrimp which included pilau rice (£ 14.50), a naan peshwari (£ 2.70), a garlic naan (£ 2.70) and four poppadoms (70p each) accompanied by a selection of condiments including mango chutney, finely chopped onions and cucumber.
Heswall Tandoori does not offer delivery, so you must pick up your order at the restaurant. When I picked it up I was told that onion bhajis (usually £ 2.85) had been donated on the house which was a nice gesture.
Since I’m not a fan of very spicy dishes, the chicken korma has been my favorite for years, and the one from Heswall Tandoori was one of the best I’ve ever had. There were plenty of chewy pieces of chicken and the sauce was thick and creamy. It was full of flavor and the coconut wasn’t too potent like I’ve found with other kormas in the past.
The royal makonwalla tandoori shrimp contained large fleshy prawns and there was almonds, raisins and a touch of butter in the tandoori sauce which was rich and had a pleasant mild tang. My take out partner is a huge fan of seafood and they were very impressed with the flavor and quality.
The pilau rice was perfectly cooked and the poppadoms with the accompanying condiments were delicious. The free onion bhajis were also perfectly cooked – soft on the inside, crispy on the outside, and full of flavor.
Both naan breads were soft, thick and chewy. The garlic naan had small pieces of garlic sprinkled into the dough which was very tasty, but the naan peshwari stole the show because its coconut flavor was amazing. I dipped small pieces of it in my korma sauce which was a perfect combination.
Overall the Heswall Tandoori take out was absolutely delicious and it was not oily or greasy like some take out can be. You can really taste the freshness of the ingredients as well as the love and passion that went into the preparation of the dishes. Can’t wait to order again from here.
