Indian cuisine is not a monolith. Luckily for us, Houstonians can experience some of that diversity right here at home. So who is the Best Indian restaurant in Houston? Depends who you ask. And where they come from. Here is our better choices.

Aga’s Restaurant & Catering

Aga’s reputation precedes itself: chances are you liked their food before dining at their Wilcrest Drive location. Located right in the middle of a traditional shopping mall, Aga’s Restaurant & Catery is a favorite with catering enthusiasts for large gatherings, celebrations and more. This Indo-Pak restaurant and banquet hall offers an extensive menu (with pictures!), offers top-notch service, and consistently serves some of the best traditional Indian and Pakistani dishes in the Greater Houston area. Aga’s goat chops and various vindaloo dishes are particularly popular, but you can’t go wrong with anything at this Indo-Pakistani mainstay.

Canteen Da Gama

Da Gama Cantina is home to perhaps the most intriguing fusion cuisine of any new Indian restaurant in Houston. Opened in 2021 at MKT in the Heights, this restaurant encompasses the tastes of Goa, a former Portuguese-Indian territory, with a Bayou City twist. Da Gama’s effortlessly sleek space serves a triple purpose, serving coffee, chai, and baked goods on their wood-paneled terrace most mornings. Afterwards, lunchtimes feature an assortment of curries, as well as dishes like grilled cheese infused with green chili chutney and Portuguese salt cod fritters served with oregano chutney. You’ll also want to stick around for social hour and dinner: Da Gama’s rotating happy hour menu features unique craft cocktails and light snacks, and the dinner menu offers an assortment of vegetarian, seafood , curries and more.

The monks

Food, culture and history are intertwined, as you will experience for yourself at The Monk’s. This Indochinese restaurant traces its flavors back to the city of Kolkata, where this unique fusion, described by Nayantara Duttaas, from Kolkata as “an Indian interpretation of Chinese cuisine”, originated in the late 1700s. At The Monk’s, traditional Chinese and Indian entrees are served alongside dishes that marry some of the characteristic flair of each respective cuisine, such as Desi style noodles mixed with paneer and Sichuan spices. With locations near Washington Avenue and on Westheimer Road, you can get your Indochinese fix inside and outside the 610 loop.

Cafe Udipi

Named after a coastal town in South India, Udipi Cafe proudly serves South Indian vegetarian cuisine. Fan favorites include Udipi’s generous helping of masala dosa, a crispy and flavorful pancake filled with spiced potatoes, and filter coffee, a signature sip of South India. Also called kaapi filter, filter coffee is not a typical infusion; the sugar, slow-brewed coffee and hot milk are carefully combined in what is known as “stretching,” the final step in brewing filter kaapi that results in a perfectly blended and airy cup of coffee. So what’s the secret? After the coffee ingredients are combined, the coffee concoction is poured back and forth between the drinking vessel and a second vessel, sometimes a small cup or bowl. Maharaja Bhog

Maharaja Bhog, located just off US 59 South near Gessner Road, is known for its tasty vegetarian thali. Think of it as an endless one-plate buffet, and at Maharaja Bhog, that’s exactly what you’ll get. And these are just a few of the dishes and places that contribute to the awe-inspiring sight and dining experience you’ll find at Musaafer.

For a sampling of a variety of Indian flavors and dishes, try India’s restaurant for lunch. India’s lunch buffet is perfect for the uninitiated in Indian cuisine and connoisseurs of tandoor oven classics like tandoori chicken and fresh naan. Every day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 19 hot and cold dishes are served at the Indian buffet, including salads, vegetable sides and curries. India’s dinner options are also sure to delight, from seafood specialties and delicious tandoori dishes to vegetarian and vegan meals.

Neeta’s Indian cuisine

Another must-try restaurant in the heart of Houston’s Mahatma Gandhi neighborhood, the official name for the South Asian community around Hillcroft, is Neeta’s Indian Kitchen. Beloved for their authentic North Indian and Indochinese dishes, including staples like butter chicken, goat cutlets and tons of vegetarian delicacies, you can’t go wrong at Neeta’s. .

Shiv Sagar

Another Southwest Freeway favorite, Shiv Sagar serves Gujarati and South Indian street flavors with a modern twist.
